How My Scrapbooking Style Has Evolved

If you follow me on social media, you get the luxury of experiencing my emotional rollercoaster. Ha! It is not what you think. I am the victim of “being your worst critic.” When I tell you guys that I constantly fall in and out of love with layouts, you would call me crazy. I do not know why I am like this, but as I mentioned in my last blog post, my followers continuously push me to accept how beautiful my work is. With that said, let us go WAAAAAY back to when I first started scrapbooking and see how my scrapbooking style has evolved over the last 12 years.

January 20, 2007

When I found out I was pregnant with my first child, I automatically called my Godmother to tell her, but mainly to ask her if she would make an album to document my pregnancy. She was quite hesitant. Fast forward to January 20, 2007. She surprised me with a few gifts for baby, along with all the basics supplies I need to start my scrapbook stash. Man! I stayed up all night scrapbooking. I do not think I got to bed until 4 am! Crazy, right! I did not have any clue what I was doing, but I was having the time of my life. Ha!

Later that year...

Later that year, I stumbled onto www.scrapbook.com. Boy, was this a game changer. It opened my eyes to the different styles there are out there. It made me realize that there was something more to scrapbooking than just sticking pictures on top of the paper. I mean I did not know a thing about mixed media, stitching, layering, or (my favorite) white space. I took some time to admire what the site had to offer (and wish I had half the talent of most of the members).

Life happened...

We decided to have another baby, and I realized scrapbooking was no longer interesting to me. Crazy, right! So, I decided to take a break. While deployed, I stumbled onto process videos on YouTube. Here I was introduced to 8.5 x 11 layouts and layering….OH MY GOODNESS! Talk about motivation! So, I made the harsh decision of downsizing from 12 x 12 layouts to 8.5 x 11 layouts. Additionally, I began hoarding all my scraps for layering and using embellishments as layering pieces versus statement pieces. Now, I cannot imagine scrapbooking any other way.

Today...

I can say that I am still a layering junkie, but I have laid off of using so many embellishments on one layout. I am back to using white space, but hand journaling more. My goal is to try and tell a story with my scrapbooking regardless if I journal or not.

Why does all this matter...

I tell you all this because you will go through different styles and phases in your scrapbooking journey. You will have times when you love your work, and times that you ask yourself “what was I thinking.” I am learning to embrace all of the styles and phases I have went through, as should you. In conclusion, looking back at how my scrapbooking style has evolved motivates me to continue creating and growing in my craft.

I have no artistic ability so I’m in awe of these. They look beautiful.

Believe me when I say that anyone can be artistic, it’s based on your willingness to learn. In the beginning, I knew nothing about being creative, but I took the time to learn how some of my favorite crafters do their thing, and the rest is history. Now drawing…that’s a big no. lol. Thank you for the love.

My style has evolved as well. I used to take up so much and fill all the spaces but now, I just do daily journaling and I’ve realized that sometimes, you need to be okay with blank spaces.
